Will Mourinho lose his favourite striker? Chelsea can buy Abraham back in the summer on previously agreed terms
When José Mourinho brought Tammy Abraham into his new team, he literally said that he wanted to get the “goal scoring beast” out of him. He certainly managed to do that last season, but it’s not so glorious now and his departure may be in play. Chelsea will have the final say again.
When José Mourinho brought Tammy Abraham into his new team, he literally said that he wanted to get the “goal scoring beast” out of him. He certainly managed to do that last season, but it’s not so glorious now and his departure may be in play. Chelsea will have the final say again.
Important, but not crucial
Abraham, along with captain Lorenzo Pellegrini, is the most valuable asset Mourinho currently has at his disposal. But at least he is no longer as dependent on the England striker as he was before this season.
Currently, Paulo Dybala is the league’s top scorer for the Roman side with 8 goals, while Abraham has scored 6. Last season, the English striker, who arrived in Italy for €40 million from Chelsea, was an absolutely key component in Mourinho’s machine.
With 17 league goals, he was clearly the team’s top scorer and we could only find 3 better scorers in the entire league that season. Ciro Immobile – 27 goals, Dusan Vlahovic – 24 goals and Lautaro Martínez – 21 goals.
However, now Mourinho has Dybala at his disposal and also Andrea Belotti, who is starting slowly, but this already 29 year old striker will surely convince of his qualities.
For Abraham, 2 great players
The Portuguese coach is very fond of Abraham, but his possible sale could bring much more than if the 25-year-old striker had stayed at AS.
In fact, Chelsea have secured the skilful youngster with a buy-back deal when signing him from the Roman outfit, which is reportedly set at £71m. This clause in the contract will be activated this summer.
This would give Mourinho considerable funds to bring in at least two quality players, which would in turn increase the quality in the squad. However, the question is whether the London outfit will take this opportunity.
The situation at Chelsea
Chelsea are currently very hard to read under new owner Todd Boehly, having shopped around in January, I wouldn’t be afraid to say somewhat senselessly. The results expected by the American owner are not coming through as many expected and patience is becoming increasingly short.
In any case, funds were not an issue in January and if that remains the case in the summer, Chelsea can reach for anyone. Whether it will be Abraham, however, is the question. Personally, I’d rather not bet on it as he certainly isn’t putting in the performances to stand up in such a big competition.
But there is a possibility…
