Changes in the coaching position are not uncommon in the football environment, almost every coach has experienced a sacking or departure. Which coaches are available at the moment?
The change of coach is most inflected with Manchester United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is not handling his star selection and there is loud talk of replacing him. Antonio Conte or Zinedine Zidane could come in. The chair is also knocking under Ronald Koeman at Barcelona. Who can the owners of the big clubs reach for?
Zinedine Zidane
Last coached by:: Real Madrid
Available from:: June 2021
Mister excellent. Zidane attracted success as a player and later as a coach. The elegant coach took a big bite in his first coaching engagement, taking over the famous Real Madrid in 2016.
However, he led Rafael Benítez’s fractious squad to victory in the Champions League and narrowed the twelve-point gap to Barcelona, eventually falling just one point short of the title.
In 2017, he won the double, dominating both La Liga and the Champions League. In 2018, he scored a hat-trick in the Champions League, while no other coach has been able to defend the competition even once. He left Madrid after that triumph, but returned to the Santiago Bernabéu in the spring of 2019 and won the Spanish title the very next season, even without Cristiano Ronaldo.
Last season, he led an injury-plagued Real Madrid to the Champions League semi-finals and narrowly missed out to Atlético Madrid by two points in the league. After the season, he resigned as Los Blancos coach for the second time, this time due to a lot of pressure on his person.
Antonio Conte
Last team he coached: Inter Milan
Available from: May 2021
The great stormtrooper. Conte is capable of coming into a club, bringing in a few reinforcements, making a splash, then unsettling the whole cabinet and leaving again quickly. That’s roughly the memories they have of Conte at Chelsea.
He started his coaching career at Arezzo, from where he moved on to Bari and then Atalanta. He then spent a year at Siena before taking up coaching at Juventus in May 2011. In the 2011/12 season he won the Italian title and also the Italian Super Cup, but he retired from the Old Lady bench in June 2012.
However, he returned to Juventus in December 2012 and won two more league titles, adding one Italian Super Cup. He left Juventus in the summer of 2014 to become coach of the Italian national team, and at Euro 2016 he led his country to the quarter-finals, where they lost on penalties to Germany.
After the Euros, he quit to coach Chelsea. He conquered the Premier League in his first season with his three-goal system, and won the FA Cup the following season. Due to disagreements with the management, he left in 2018, took over Inter a year later and helped break Juventus’ nine-year reign, to which he himself contributed three titles. But due to a disagreement with Inter’s management over finances, he resigned in May 2021 after the title.
Frank Lampard
Last team he coached:: Chelsea
Available from:: January 2021
Lampard is one of the coaches who has undoubtedly been helped in his career by Zinedine Zidane. When other teams saw how successful the club icon could be as a coach, a boom took off. Lampard, Pirlo, Solskjaer, Gerrard, Gattuso.
Lampard’s first professional engagement was at Derby County in the Championship. He took over at Derby in January 2018 and a year later he was moving to the club he has linked his entire playing career with. Chelsea.
He faced a transfer ban at the start and did more than respectable with the offspring. In the summer he got huge signings led by Werner, Havertz, Ziyech, Thiago Silva and Mendy, but the position at one of the best clubs in England was probably still too much for him.
Chelsea had a lot of potential but struggled and the performances were very inconsistent. So in January 2021, Lampard was recalled from the Blues after two years. The team was taken over by Thomas Tuchel, who led it to a Champions League victory.
