Will West Ham let David Moyes leave? The board will consider whether someone else is the ideal coach for the club
West Ham have only signed David Moyes until the end of this season. Logically, the management will be wondering whether to keep the experienced Scot on the bench or refresh the team. A change in his role at the club is also reportedly in play.
West Ham have only signed David Moyes until the end of this season. Logically, the management will be wondering whether to keep the experienced Scot on the bench or refresh the team. A change in his role at the club is also reportedly in the cards.
Moyes has been in charge of West Ham since November 7, 2017. In those 6 years, it can be said that the 60-year-old coach has elevated the club. Moreover, he dominated the Conference League last season with the London outfit. But the management now has a big decision to make. Will he stay or will a new coach come in?
Moyes’ results
According to journalist Dean Jones, the Glasgow native’s situation is uncertain. West Ham, after a great 7th place finish in the 2021/22 season, didn’t exactly fail twice in the Premier League last season, finishing 14th. Despite their success in European cups, the management was not happy.
It’s not ideal now either, as the Hammers are 9th in the league table. And that’s mainly due to a good start. In the last 4 league rounds there have been 3 defeats and we are not talking about top teams. West Ham have lost to Aston Villa, Everton and Brentford.
They only ended that bad streak with a win over Nottingham Forest. However, it was only at the very end that the Hammers secured the three points when Tomas Soucek cheered up the home fans in the stadium with an accurate header.
In the Europa League, however, West Ham won 3 out of 4 matches, and in the EFL Cup they claimed the scalp of Arsenal, with Liverpool awaiting them in the quarter-finals on 20 December. So this season is off to a decent start given the paper expectations.
West Ham’s performance
At the moment, attacking football is in vogue, which is also celebrating great success. London fans are no doubt eager to witness an interesting spectacle. It’s just that Moyes’ tactics are somewhat preventing it.
In the current Premier League season, you will find only four teams that have a lower percentage of possession than West Ham (42.1%)
The team is built on careful defensive defence and matches against top teams are often an ordeal for the Londoners’ fans. But West Ham don’t need the ball, they need very little to score points. To be fair, though, that’s not always the case. The Hammers have played some very good and, to the eye, pretty games.
However, if we were to take the Premier League table with xPTS into account, West Ham would drop down to 13th place. The Hammers are in a pretty similar position to Manchester United. Anyone who watches their games regularly and then looks at the table will know that both teams have more points than they deserve.
The future of the Hammers
The West Ham management certainly appreciate everything Moyes has done for them over the past 6 years. The fans will be no different. However, now comes a very difficult moment when they have to decide whether it is time to move on. Furthermore, there is talk of the Scottish coach staying at the club and moving into a different role.
Meanwhile, there is already one name circulating in the English media that could take over the London club. It is the former outstanding midfielder Michael Carrick, who is currently in the Championship with Middlesbrough.
The future of Moyes will certainly be determined by future results, which, as already mentioned, have not been good lately. However, given the experience of the Scottish coach, it can be counted on that West Ham will keep at least in the quiet middle of the table.
His big motivation will surely be the Europa League, where he would surely like to shine as he did in the Conference League last season, given his approaching end of his coaching career. Unless some really bad losing streak comes, Moyes will finish this season.
Whether the Hammers then decide to head towards the future with a new man on the bench is real enough. Even if they don’t, that time is inexorably approaching.
