Will there be a reduction in the number of teams in the Italian top flight? According to Italian media, the biggest Serie A clubs are seeking to reduce the number of participants from 20 to 18. This would be a return to the old system, but other clubs are not in favour of such an idea.
Based on Italian media reports, Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan are seeking to reduce the number of participants in the first league. Today, there are a total of twenty teams in the Italian top flight. But the three giants mentioned above are asking for a reduction to eighteen teams.
Football Italia reports that the initial proposal was reportedly made by the president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Gabriele Gravina. Juventus, AC and Inter want to work with him on this plan.
However, the other Serie A participants do not like such an idea. Moreover, the league itself has already warned some time ago that it is against the reduction of teams.
The proposal to reduce the number of participants in the Italian top flight is already facing stiff opposition. It should be added that at the meeting where this proposal was discussed. There were indeed important representatives of the biggest giants of Serie A present. g
Namely Inter CEO Beppe Marotta, Juventus general manager Maurizio Scanavino and director Francesco Calvo, plus Milan president Paolo Scaroni.
Serie A will have “only” eighteen participants
So if such a proposal were to go through, it would be a return to an old and quite possibly forgotten system. Serie A last had eighteen participants in the 2003/04 season. And this number of clubs has been promoted in Italy for many years.
Twenty teams have been active in the Italian top flight until the 2004/05 season. Atalanta Bergamo were relegated from 20th place with 35 points, while Brescia finished 19th with 41 points. Juventus celebrated the championship title at the end of the season.
