Marco Reus missed out on EURO 2012, World Cup 2014, EURO 2016 and EURO 2021. Will we see him at the 2022 World Cup? That was the question on the minds of perhaps all German football fans as they watched the BVB captain being carried off the pitch on a stretcher over the weekend. Now we know the answer.
Marco Reus was substituted after just half an hour of play in Saturday’s Revierderby game. He was left on the pitch after a hard tackle by an opposing player and had to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher. Two months before the World Cup, a frightening but actually not that unusual phenomenon.
There were fears that Borussia Dortmund had lost their captain and driving force, and the German national team had lost a mainstay who quietly contributed 9 league goals and 17 assists last season, for a long time.
Fortunately, the worst predictions didn’t come true, and although Marco Reus suffered ligament damage in his ankle, he should be on the pitch in a month’s time. Optimistic predictions say even three weeks.
The German national team will only lose him for the national break that is just beginning, but he should be ready for the World Cup.
In the meantime, Giovanni Reyna can replace him in Dortmund in the opening games after the national break. a 19-year-old, perhaps a little forgotten super talent. He’s been unlucky with injuries himself, so let’s wish him to toughen up and become Borussia Dortmund’s new young superstar, as he hinted at two years ago.
