Will Lukaku join Chelsea for a record sum? Tuchel admits need for striker, but not at any price

Thomas Tuchel has an excellent team at his disposal, including on offense. He just lacks a classic penalty killer who will be able to score at least 20 goals season after season. Will that be Romelu Lukaku?

According to the English media, Chelsea have turned their sights on Lukaku, who has been at Stamford Bridge in the past. However, Inter reportedly rejected the Blues’ initial offer, which was supposed to be €100 million.

To this, the London outfit are set to respond as follows, according to Goal, raising their offer to €130 million. And with this offer, it seems he could already succeed.

Inter are in financial trouble and after winning the Serie A, coach Antonio Conte left the team, followed by the fast-track Achraf Hakimi. Moreover, the sale of the 28-year-old striker would bring huge funds to solve the poor financial situation and also help to fill the squad appropriately.

Even journalists are aware of this and have asked Tuchel about whether Chelsea are indeed luring Lukaku.

“I won’t talk about players who are not in my team. Lukaku is a fantastic player, but he is an Inter player and I will not talk about him in this situation. I’m sure you can imagine very well that a lot of players want to join our team, but I’m not going to comment on that,” the German coach responded as any other coach does in a similar situation.

“But of course there are some players we are thinking about. But I won’t mention any names because I personally don’t like other coaches talking about my players either. So I hope you understand,” Tuchel finished the topic of Lukaku.

Chelsea have three options in attack – Timo Werner, Tammy Abraham and Kai Havertz. However, none of them are the type of player that the departed Olivier Giroud was. So it is no surprise that they are looking for such a player.

“With the departure of Giroud, we would need a player who can play with his back to goal, which for us means we could add another attacking option to our game,” Tuchel confirmed that Chelsea are looking for a striker like Lukaku.

259 goals in 519 games is a great number. As for last season, he scored 30 goals in 44 games and added 10 assists.

“But we won’t buy someone at any price and in a panic. Whatever happens, we will be competitive. We have complete confidence in our players,” Tuchel concluded the interview.

You can’t disagree with that. The German coach has confirmed his qualities since coming to Chelsea. In 31 matches, his charges have managed to win on 20 occasions and have scored 39 goals. However, a player like Lukaku would make Chelsea a big favourite to win the Premier League and not only in it.
