Conor McGregor is one of the biggest sports stars of the past decade and his name still lingers today. Now he has caused a big stir by stating that he would like to buy the English big man who is up for grabs. But can he afford it?
Twelve years and enough. Liverpool are not experiencing the best start to a season for years and are now in further uncertainty. The club is up for sale. Earlier this week it was announced by FSG, the group that owns the club.
“FSG has previously said that, in the right circumstances, we would consider new shareholders if it was in the best interests of Liverpool as a club,” read a statement quoted by the Mirror.
Fans have mixed reactions to the news. The fact is that the club’s transfer policy has often been the target of criticism, even from coach Jürgen Klopp, who has constantly alluded to a lack of financial strength compared to Manchester City.
On the other hand, nobody can question the financial stability that Liverpool has been characterised by in recent years, and that is what FSG is responsible for. So Reds fans can only hope that the new owner will bring investment in addition to financial stability.
Conor McGregor is interested in buying…
Liverpool is a world-renowned brand. No need to worry about no takers. Indeed, star fighter Conor McGregor has publicly commented on the potential purchase. But there are a few catches.
According to his own words, he has already asked for information and he is very keen on buying this football club. One of the catches, however, is that the Irishman is a fan of Manchester United, the Reds’ rival.
The other, but even more crucial, catch is the price. McGregor may be one of the very rich athletes, but he could cost Liverpool around £3.6 billion. At least, that was the value of the unit from the city of The Beatles in May 2022, according to Forbes.
It is worth remembering that Chelsea was valued at £2.5 billion, with the consortium led by Todd Boehly eventually buying it for £4.25 billion. So we can expect Liverpool’s price to be higher too.
McGregor himself can’t afford anything like that. But he may go in the same direction as other sports stars. That is to partner with other investors. For example, the legendary LeBron James has a stake in Liverpool.
