Jan Bořil received a second yellow card in the match against England and will only watch the 8-final against the Netherlands from the stands. However, there was a problem on the left side of the defence, Jaroslav Šilhavy has no direct substitute.

It is probably the most pressing position of the Czech national team. If someone drops out at stopper, in goal, at right back, in midfield, in attack, there would always be someone to replace him post for post. But that doesn’t apply to “Bořil’s” post.

the 30-year-old back has created such a strong position in the national team that he has hardly allowed anyone else to play left back. And when his replacement, Filip Novak, played only 985 minutes for Fenerbahce all season, another alternative was sought. That was Aleš Matějů, who is absolutely unproven in the national team.

And although he can play over his foot on the left flank, he has been playing at right-back for the entire season in the Italian second league for Brescia.

The most realistic option seems to be moving Pavel Kadeřábek. The Hoffenheim defender regularly played on the right side of the defence until he was dropped by Vladimir Coufal. He has gained a lot of experience in the Bundesliga, and he has even jumped a few times on the left side of the defence.

He’s probably the best candidate to defend Dumfries, he’s got the speed and experience of stopping even better opponents.

Another option is Michal Sadilek. The second youngest member of the national squad is originally a central midfielder, but he shot into adult football at PSV as a left-back. If German Philipp Max had not come in, the Eredivisie runner-up position might still be occupied by the Uherské Hradiště native.

In some duels he has also played like this for the U21 national team, but he has a small deficit. And that is the national team inexperience, he has only played in one preparatory match for the A-team. And coach Šilhavý doesn’t like to rely on untried players.

The last option, which is not talked about much, is the inclusion of Lukáš Masopust. He has played the vast majority of the season at fullback for Slavia, and against Brno he also tried out the left-back position. On the right side, however, Coufal would lose the interplay with his partner he is used to and a new right-back would have to be found.

Jaroslav Šilhavy’s options:

Aleš Matějů

Michal Sadílek
