Arsenal officially announced the transfer of Jakub Kiwior to the Emirates Stadium on Monday evening. The Polish defender thus became the second signing in this January transfer window after winger Leandro Trossard. Who is it?

Kiwior moved to Italian side Spezia a year and a half ago from Slovakian side Zilina for €2.2m. Since then, he has managed to appear in 43 competitive matches, but in which he has not scored any goals. He has scored 4 times and assisted 7 goals in 61 games for Žilina.

But nobody will blame him for that in Spezia, because his defensive performances helped his employer to save the Serie A last season. It should be noted that so far this season, the club has managed to stay on the top of the standings guaranteeing salvation in the top competition.

This, perhaps surprising to many, Arsenal transfer has great potential for the future. However, it is uncertain what plans the Spanish coach will have for him.

“It’s great that Jakub has joined us. He’s a young versatile defender who has shown great potential and quality at Spezia in Serie A and also at international level. Jakub is a player who will add strength and quality to our defence. We welcome Jakub and his family to Arsenal and we look forward to working with him,” Mikel Arteta commented on the new signing on the club’s website.

Still very young for a defender (22), this is an investment for the future and it is possible that the Polish international, who performed well at the World Cup in Qatar, could be sent out on loan. Arteta followed a similar approach with, for example, William Saliba, who wandered around France after several loan spells.

But the fact is that the Gunners currently have 5 players at the stopper position with Kiwior, with the least used being 27-year-old Rob Holding, who although has featured in cups, has only played 13 minutes in the Premier League this season.

It is thus very real that the Polish stopper will be preferred over Holding, who will either stay in the squad due to the possible loss of others with Arsenal still facing a really long and busy season, or he will be the one to head elsewhere.

Kiwior’s closest opportunity to introduce himself to English fans will be on January 27, when Arsenal face Manchester City in a cup match. After that, the Gunners will face Everton, who will probably be ready with a new coach.
