At the moment, Moyes can only rely on Michail Antonio, in fact he has to. He doesn’t have another top striker in the team. Sebastien Haller left for Ajax last winter and no replacement has come in.
West Ham have tried to get a lot of strikers, but none of them have worked out. Antonio has racked up 10 goals and 10 assists this season, which are good numbers, but the problem comes when he’s not on the pitch. The Jamaican striker is also injured quite often and certainly needs a substitute.
Transfer insider Dean Jones tried to give an idea of who could be the new signing at the London Stadium.
The main candidate is Darwin Núñez from Benfica Lisbon. The Uruguayan striker is thought to be a priority for Moyes, with West Ham even readying a club record £60million bid in January. Only it was rejected, reportedly on the grounds that the 22-year-old prefers a move to a team playing in the Champions League.
Núñez has already netted 26 goals this season and is also attracting interest from Arsenal and Newcastle. So the Hammers are more likely to look elsewhere, with options being found in England.
Armando Broja, who is on loan at Saints from Chelsea, is shining at Southampton. The 20-year-old striker has scored 9 goals this season and has been putting in great performances. He should also be on Moyes’ radar.
The third option is Ben Brereton. The English striker, who recently started representing Chile thanks to his mother’s background, is shining in the Championship. He has scored 20 goals for Blackburn and has probably outgrown the second division.
The Czech youngsters born in 1998 will also have unpleasant memories of Brereton. At the 2017 U19 Euros, they made it through to the semi-finals where they were only knocked out by England with Brereton scoring a last minute goal.
