Slovakia said goodbye to the European Championship right after the end of the group stage. Despite one win, Štefan Tarkovič’s team received a lot of criticism. And deservedly so, the performance of the Slovaks was perhaps the weakest in the tournament.

Dusan Galis, former coach of Slovakia and Slovan Bratislava, believed in Tarkovic’s selection before the last match. The Spaniards had not really played well so far and needed to win their last game to go further.

“I am disappointed with our performance. I saw both of the Spanish games before, in which they didn’t give a good performance, and I thought we could have got a draw. But after 20 minutes it was clear it was going to be tough. We deserved nothing but to lose for that performance.”

According to Galis, the fact that some players did not play regularly for their clubs played a key role. At the same time, the Slovaks cannot rely on players from the local Fortuna League, the level is low and the main stars are usually foreign players.

“If the quality of our league does not change, there will be no interest in our players. Our players don’t play in the starting line-ups of their clubs, so we can’t expect great performances in the national team. This is a direct proportion. The Euros showed us where modern football is heading.”

Ladislav Borbély, an expert and former Trenčín coach, also gave his opinion. He thinks that the only players worthy of the national jersey are Milan Škriniar and Martin Dúbravka.

“We had only one excellent player, Milan Škriniar, but he had no partner on the pitch. The squad consists of 11 players, we didn’t have that many. We only had a few players to complement Škriniar, or Martin Dúbravka.”

Borbély, on the other hand, doesn’t think it’s right to sack the coach again. He did not have a large number of quality players at his disposal and even one win in the group can perhaps be considered a success.

“The result is declamatory, it reflects Slovak reality and it is also a bit harsh. But the important thing is not to deal with it the way we are used to dealing with it in Slovakia. Let’s go, let’s sack the coach quickly, let’s sack the masseur,” Borbély concluded.
