We came with 4 strikers who were playing together for the first time and I think they did well, Klopp was pleased with the win over Rangers

Jurgen Klopp decided to change the system of play from his classic 4-3-3 to 4-2-3-1 before the match against Rangers, which was probably forced by the crisis in the centre of midfield, where a number of players have been struggling with injuries since the beginning of the season. It worked well on Tuesday, but how will the Reds fare going forward?

Jurgen Klopp decided to change the system of play from his classic 4-3-3 to 4-2-3-1 before the match against Rangers, which was probably forced by the crisis in the centre of midfield, where a number of players have been struggling with injuries since the beginning of the season. It worked well on Tuesday, but how will the Reds fare going forward?

Liverpool are not exactly having a great year as they slowly start to pick themselves up after a very poor start to the season. The win over Rangers is all the more valuable for the 55-year-old German coach’s charges.

Klopp’s 60th anniversary match as Reds coach in the Champions League was decided by the duo of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah. However, the rest of the team also put in a good performance and did not allow the Rangers players to score.

“We had a session with the players about the new system. We told the boys how we envision it and I think they did very well,” the German coach commented on the new 4-2-3-1 formation to BT Sport after the game.

“Rangers played very cautiously, but they were still chasing the goal. We had a lot of chances throughout the game. We came with 4 strikers who were playing together for the first time and I think they did well. I’m happy with 2:0, it’s a solid result, but we have to keep working on ourselves,” Klopp concluded the interview.

In attack, Díaz, Jota, Salah and Núñez, who previously only rotated in an attacking trident, were thus together. However, it was clear that it was not quite there yet, as Salah confirmed after the game.

“It wasn’t a perfect night, but it’s a good result. We created a lot of chances and we deserved the win. The new formation worked well, all four attacking players wanted to score. But there are definitely aspects of the game that we still need to improve,” he commented on the new system.

Liverpool did their duty and got another three points, which puts them just three points behind leaders Napoli, who crushed Ajax 1-6 on their home pitch. Rangers are still without a point and without scoring a goal. Maybe they will finally assert themselves in the rematch at Ibrox Stadium.

But before that, Liverpool will visit London to play Arsenal and after Rangers they will welcome Manchester City to Anfield. It will therefore be interesting to see how the players cope with these changes in games against top teams.
