Viktoria Plzeň played their second Champions League match after losing 1:5 to Barcelona. This time they welcomed the famous Inter Milan at their home stadium, who also lost their first match, a 0:2 defeat to Bayern.
Staněk – Havel, Hejda, Pernica, Jemelka – Kalvach, Bucha – Sýkora, Vlkanova, Mosquera – Chorý.
Plzeň came in knowing that they can produce a good result. Inter, however, came out with an active tempo right from the start, looking to make up for the loss to Barcelona. After the first small chances, Inter got a big chance in the 17th minute. Acerbi shot from close range, but Stanek deflected his shot over the crossbar with a good save.
However, the next action resulted in a goal. Correa got to the penalty area, where he managed to find Džeko with a pass, who managed to beat Stanek. Inter Milan went 1-0 up in the 20th minute.
But after a few minutes, Viktoria could have struck too. However, Adam Vlkanova failed to convert a huge opportunity, shooting high over the bar. Inter started to create more action again, but it was nothing dangerous for the Pilsen defence.
Inter applied more pressure at the end of the first half when Džeko again showed a good shot. This time, however, his dangerous shot was caught by Stanek. Mkhitaryan was able to get to the ball, but his shot was blocked. Half-time ended 0:1, but Inter Plzen outplayed him. It looked 67::33 on possession and 9::4 on shots.
The second half started with no changes. The Italian team attacked again and right at the beginning of the half goalkeeper Stanek made some great saves. First he stopped a good header by Gosens, a shot by Škriniar and then he saved Džeko.
In the 53rd minute, Viktoria showed up again. Mosquera tried to surprise from a longer distance, his shot was blocked and Plzen got at least a corner kick, but from which they did not threaten the goal.
The big problem for Plzen came after an hour of play when Bucha lost the ball and was grossly fouled while trying to recover it. The referee awarded a yellow card, but after consulting the video referee the colour was changed to red.
Inter pressed again, but Viktoria Plzen managed to get one counter-attack in. It was led by Sýkora, who also got a shot, but it was blocked by Inter players. On the other side, Inter made a much better counterattack. The ball was headed by Džeko, who this time in a passing role found Dumfries in front of the whitewash, who increased the score to 2: 0.
However, Plzen were not going to give up. After one corner kick, Bassey got a great opportunity and his header was well placed towards the bar. However, this header was blocked by goalkeeper Onana with a good save.
However, that was the last great action that Victoria showed us in the match. They got a few more centres, but Inter Milan kept their 2: 0 lead and took 3 points back to Italy. After two games in the Champions League, Plzen remain in last place with a 1::7 record and 0 points.
In the next match, Viktoria players will travel to Bayern to try to resist another European giant. Inter will host Barcelona.
