How important it is to have Emiliano Martínez! The fans of Argentina, but also of Aston Villa, know it. The controversial goalkeeper once again proved his great qualities in the match against Leeds, when he pulled off a great save and contributed to his team’s victory.

Experienced and respected strategist Unai Emery took over Aston Villa in the autumn before the start of the World Cup in Qatar. But so far, even under his leadership, things have not been ideal.

The last time was a huge cup slap in the face when Birmingham failed to beat Stevenage, a team from the fourth league. So there was a lot to make up for on Friday. Leeds were at Villa Park.

Given Leeds’ poor form, Aston Villa were quite big favourites and lived up to their billing, but it wasn’t easy. The visitors did not give away points cheaply.

Fortunately, the Villans could rely on Emiliano Martínez. A controversial goalkeeper, but one who, with his fantastic performances, saved Argentina’s World Cup title and won the award for the best goalkeeper of the championship.

No football fan can doubt his footballing qualities, although his behaviour will not win him much sympathy from everyone. And he did against Leeds.

When his team was leading 1:0 after Leon Bailey’s goal, Leeds had a huge chance. Jack Harrison was on the end of a cross, but Martínez didn’t allow him to score.

The save was crucial. Who knows what the game would have looked like if Leeds had equalised. Instead, the Villans took a two-goal lead in the second half and even so.

A goal in the 81st minute by Patrick Bamford reduced the score to 2-1 and could have made the game more dramatic. But Aston Villa kept the lead. Even with the help of Martínez, who among other things saw a yellow card for stalling.
