The Masters in Madrid is getting underway. The very first day of men’s singles brought a match that proved to be very interesting. The duel between China’s Shang and France’s Moutet produced many remarkable moments and certainly didn’t just impress with its length.
Masters in Madrid
The tournament in the Spanish capital is the second Masters event on clay this year. Of the world’s top players, only Novak Djokovic is missing after his surprising decision .
The first-round match pitted qualifier Corentin Moutet of France against wild-card qualifier Shang of China.
A bizarre match
The Frenchman was the favourite for the match. However, the course of the match brought many more unexpected situations than the progress of Shang. The 100-minute length of the first set already indicated that the match would drag on.
It ended up lasting almost four hours, but even its marathon length was not the most interesting thing that happened in Madrid.
Moutet successfully asked a disruptive spectator to leave the stands during the match. It was also accompanied by several disputed balls and decisions.
But among the moments that tennis fans will definitely remember the most are the following situations. Moutet was interested in refreshing himself with coffee. However, this request was strictly refused by the match referee.
At this point, the Frenchman had a happy ending. The desired drink was eventually brought to him by one of the spectators in the stands.
But at the decisive moment of the match, Moutet was certainly not too happy. The match went into a shortened third set. At 5:5, the 25-year-old went on serve at a critical moment of the entire match. You can see for yourself how he managed to serve in this situation.
Moutet eventually lost the tiebreak and the whole match. Shang of China will play against the home team’s Fokine in the second round.
