A boxing gala was held in Wroclaw on Saturday night, dominated by a title fight between Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois.
The Ukrainian, who would like to unify the four most prestigious world titles, which was last done by Lennox Lewis in 1999, defended the WBA super, WBO, IBF and IBO world titles. The only thing missing is the WBC title held by Tyson Fury, who has so far avoided the fight.
That’s also why Usyk went into the fight with Dubois. And he was able to dominate him quite easily. He was the better man for most of the fight. At the end of the eighth round, he sent the British fighter to the count, and by the ninth, he was able to end it.
The Ukrainian hero sent Dubois down. For a while it looked like the Englishman might still get up and get back in the game, but he didn’t.
Usyk was blessed with better movement, more accuracy and more frequent punches. Dubois did not take advantage of his weight and height advantage. However, he also had his good moments. But the most important one is controversial.
It was the fifth round when the Greenwich native hit Usyk with an uppercut on the bottom. The Ukrainian went down and Dubois and his coaches thought they had won the fight. However, the judges ruled it was a low blow.
This is the most debated moment of the entire fight and there is not much consensus on it. However, the British public is clear that Dubois was robbed of the win as Usyk took a long time to recover from the punch.
However, it doesn’t change the result. Usyk was the better boxer except for that moment and deservedly won. After the fight he was asked about the duel with Fury. He said he’s ready to fight him tomorrow. Fury, however, will face Francis Ngannou in the fall.
Dubois and his trainers announced right in the ring after the fight that they felt robbed and would want a rematch. Manager and promoter Frank Warren will also demand it. The audience in Wroclaw, however, chanted Usyk’s name as the English boxer spoke.
