It was September 22, 2018, when Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday faced each other in the ninth round of the English top flight. Although the home side lost 1:2, the match went down in football history thanks to a stunning goal by John McGinn.

Aston Villa entered the 2018/19 season of England’s second highest competition very well. In the opening round they beat Hull 3-1 and then Wigan 3-2. But then came a series of three draws, followed by a heavy defeat against Sheffield United (1:4).

Aston Villa players did not make up for their reputation from the opening two rounds in the following game against Blackburn (1:1). However, they won against Rotherham (2: 0).

They were looking to build on their win in the ninth round of the Championship when they hosted Sheffield Wednesday at home. The first half of that game ended in a goalless draw.

However, the visitors took the lead in the second half, with Marco Martias scoring just four minutes into the second half. The scoreboard showed 0:1, but it didn’t last long.

In the 53rd minute, the home side capped off their offensive action with a goal, but not just any goal. After a few passes and centres, John McGinn waited for a deflected ball and scored from a volley.

Goal of the month!

The strike by the now 28-year-old Scottish player was subsequently included in the nominations for the goal of the month, with 54% of the votes in his favour he eventually received the award.

However, it didn’t help Aston Villa to victory. In fact, Steven Fletcher restored the visitors’ lead in the 67th minute, and the 2-1 scoreline for Sheffield held until the end.

However, Aston Villa picked up their performance during the course of the season and finished in fifth place with 76 points after 46 rounds. In the subsequent play-offs, they were narrowly successful first against West Bromwich and then beat Derby County 2-1 in the final to qualify for the Premier League.
