Slovakia fell to neighbouring Austria 2-0. The winning goal was scored by Baumgartner after just six seconds of play. Did Slovakia score the fastest goal in football history?
Austria won 2-0 with Slovakia
You don’t just see goals like that. In Saturday’s friendly between Slovakia and Austria, our southern neighbours took the lead after just six seconds of play. The 24-year-old midfielder of the Bundesliga side Leipzig scored.
Christoph Baumgartner ran with the ball at his feet right after the kick-off and none of the Slovak players were able to stop him. The 24-year-old from Hoffenheim reached the front of the net and scored with a cross.
The Austrian national team eventually won 2-0 in Bratislava, with Weimann adding a second goal in the 82nd minute. The home team suffered from a lack of shooting. Even Sparta’s Lukas Haraslin failed to score.
But let’s go back to the unique goal by Baumgartner. Is it the fastest goal in history? For example, at the 2002 World Cup, Turkey’s Hakan Şükür scored after just 11 seconds of the match against South Korea.
The fastest goal in two seconds
Václav Mašek of the Czech Republic scored after just 16 seconds against Mexico at the 1962 World Cup. But the fastest goal was probably scored in Saudi Arabia. According to Nova Television, it happened in 2009.
During a match between Al-Hilal and Al-Shoalah, the then 19-year-old Al-Hilal player Nawaf Al Abed scored directly from a throw-in. It took two seconds for the ball to reach the goal.
The fastest goal in the history of football certainly did not fall on the Tehelny Pole in Bratislava. Baumgartner would have had to shoot right away.
