Chelsea failed to win the fifth round of the Premier League, losing 1:2 to Southampton. The home side took the points, had more chances and after the win they finished within a point of their Tuesday opponents.
Mohamed Elyonoussi had the first chance of the match in the third minute, but only hit the centre of the goal. Chelsea remained silent until the 22nd minute when Raheem Sterling went alone at the goalkeeper, whose accurate slide was stopped by Bella-Kotchap.
A minute later, the England international was celebrating. His first attempt was still blocked by the defence, but no one stopped the finish.
But Southampton did not give up, they continued to perform well and were rewarded in the 29th minute. After a corner kick, the ball came to Romeo Lavi, who sent it uncompromisingly to the near post from the edge of the area.
The Saints did not stop attacking and turned the tide in stoppage time. Adam Armstrong was well positioned in the penalty area and sent the ball under the crossbar.
Elyonoussi could have increased the lead after the change of sides, but his header was cleared by Marc Cucurella. Southampton were the more active despite their lead, Chelsea were happy to turn away any hints of chances.
In the 73rd minute, Mohamed Salisu hit the space of the away goal, but Thiago Silva kicked the ball off the line. Although Chelsea dominated the ball at the end of the game, they didn’t get to the dangerous end and lost 1: 2.
