Liverpool beat West Ham, Soucek didn’t excel
The Reds went into the game against the Hammers as big favourites. Moreover, boosted by the weekend win over Manchester City. And the game more or less looked like it. Darwin Nunez opened the scoring in the 22nd minute and overall West Ham were happy to be only a goal down in the first half.
However, it’s worth noting that in the last minute of the first 45 minutes, Jarrod Bowen gave away a penalty which Alisson gamely saved.
Liverpool’s dominance continued in the second half. But there was no further goal. Tomas Soucek played the whole game and was one of the few Hammers players to get a big chance. But thanks to a great block by James Milner, he didn’t convert.
Public reaction? Soucek a lightning rod for criticism
After an extremely successful entry into West Ham, Tomas Soucek is far from being able to build on his excellent performances and shooting productivity. It’s as if he has failed to be the difference maker for the Hammers at many times.
He has cracked the whip and the standards he has set cannot be maintained on a regular basis. So even if he doesn’t play all that badly, more is expected of him. The same was true against Liverpool. He certainly wasn’t one of the worst players on the pitch.
Even WhoScored gave him a 6.7. That’s the third highest of any West Ham player. Still, he’s the one the fans are singling out for criticism. Soucek’s time is up, they say he should leave and he is very average.
The 23 year old Flynn Downes is gaining a lot of popularity among the fans and should be playing in place of Soucek. Maybe because he’s supposedly 20 times better.
“I’d be down too if my manager thought Soucek was a better footballer than me,” was one of the comments below Downes’ post-match statement.
“I thought you had to be a footballer to play 90 minutes on Premier League soil,” reads another criticism of the Czech midfielder.
According to some, Soucek’s time is up and he should go home.
