João Cancelo went on loan from Manchester City to Bayern Munich in the winter, where he was selected by Julian Nagelsmann. But he was sent off last night, with the national team matches going on at the time. So when Cancelo found out afterwards, he was quite shocked.
It was supposed to be a deliverance for Cancelo. He was dropped from the Manchester City squad after the new year and there was reportedly a sharp exchange with Pep Guardiola. Within a day, a transfer to Bayern was sealed.
And at first it looked like a liberation. The Portuguese all-rounder jumped straight into the starting line-up at right-back and netted two goals in his first two games. But Nagelsmann gradually switched to a three-stopper system, leaving no room for Cancelo and he dropped out of the starting line-up.
There were reports from Munich that the 28-year-old is bitter about this and is not talking to anyone in the training centre.
But he came back to life at the national team meeting with Portugal, started in the starting line-up and scored immediately. But at the same time that Cancelo was playing against Liechtenstein, Bayern decided to recall Julian Nagelsmann and replace him with Thomas Tuchel.
So when Cancelo came to be interviewed on Portuguese television after the game, he had no idea. When the reporter told him the hot news, Cancelo’s expression spoke for itself.
“I didn’t know. I didn’t know, I’m quite surprised. I want to thank coach Nagelsmann for bringing me to Bayern and I want to wish him good luck,” a shocked Cancelo responded.
“As for Tuchel, he made me lose the Champions League final (Man City – Chelsea 2021), so I hope he wins it for me this year,” he added about his new coach.
