Last season 2. Bundesliga last season saw the return of the big clubs. Schalke and Werder Bremen returned to the elite after a year. And both clubs weren’t exactly trusted twice. However, Bremen are doing very well after three rounds.
The four-time German champions have taken two points in the first two rounds. First, they got a very valuable draw in Wolfsburg (2: 2), then the same result at home to Stuttgart. However, the equalising goal was scored in the 95th minute.
And Bremen’s intention to play all the way to the end in all matches was confirmed in the third round when they visited Dortmund. Borussia were the clear favourites, but the match didn’t look like it.
Werder were better. They had more chances, more shots, even had more possession. However, until the 89th minute, they were down 0-2. Then Lee Buchanan reduced the deficit with a beautiful goal. It was expected to be dramatic, but would we see a sensational turnaround?
In the 93rd minute Niklas Schmidt equalised at 2: 2 and two minutes later Oliver Burke completed the turnaround. Bremen thus claimed a valuable scalp. All the more valuable because Jiri Pavlenka recently broke his nose and was hit in the face by Modeste in the 39th minute.
After an incomplete third round, Werder are now in 7th position with five points. In the next round they will be looking to take on Eintracht Frankfurt at home.
