Dinamo Zagreb have reached the group stage of the Champions League and welcomed Chelsea in the first match of the group stage. The London team was a huge favourite, but they did not live up to their role.
That it is the undisputed king of Croatia, no one doubts, but Dinamo Zagreb would carry its domestic success to Europe. Last season, it did not do badly at all.
This season, they made it through qualification to the Champions League group stage, beating Chelsea, AC Milan and Red Bull Salzburg in the group stage. And it was Chelsea who became the first team the Croatian side faced.
Zagreb was the clear underdog. The bookmakers’ odds on Dinamo to win before the match rarely headed below 8.00. However, nothing is impossible in football and now it has been confirmed.
Especially the first half went well for the home team. With the exception of ball possession, Chelsea had no advantage in anything. On the contrary. Already in the 13th minute Dinamo showed a great quick attack, which ended with the only goal of the match by Mislav Orsic.
In the second half, it was a different Chelsea. The Blues pressed, tried to equalise and preferably to turn the score around, but in vain. Dinamo fought back and kept the three points.
This unexpected three-point gain is crucial for a potential spring continuation in the European Cups. It will not only give the team hope, but also a good dose of confidence, which the Croatians will want to use in the next matches.
