Bremen, as the newcomer of this Bundesliga season, was one of the surprises of the autumn. It looked like they would stay quietly in the middle of the table and the rescue mission would pass them by. But the first round after the break shows that it won’t be that easy. Jiri Pavlenka scored five times in the first half.

A real exclamation point at the start of the spring Bundesliga season. A big embarrassment for Werder Bremen and the fans. They had been looking forward to the return of club football for a long time and traditionally several thousand of them came to Cologne.

But after just 36 minutes, they must have been crying when the scoreboard showed a 5:0 scoreline in favour of the home team from the city on the river Rhine.

Cologne scored all their goals after mistakes by Werder. Linton Maina scored first from a break in the ninth minute. And where did Bremen go wrong? They played an absolutely disastrous standard situation short, lost the ball and the return to defence was chaotic and lax.

At the end of the 15th minute, for a change, a disastrously played outlet pass, a pointless and inaccurate pass through the middle of the pitch in their own half, which allowed Cologne to win the ball and score a goal through Steffan Tiges.

Tigges added another goal just 6 minutes later. Jiri Pavlenka couldn’t look at the inability of his defence and tried to break the opponent’s attempt to break through by running far out of the goal and sliding.

But the ball only found the opponent’s feet and when the goal was empty, Tigges tried it almost from the middle and hit it accurately. He scored from 47 yards.

In the 30th minute, Ellyes Skhiri made it 4:0, taking advantage of the chaos, confusion and lack of cohesion in the Werder defence to beat Pavlenka. The same could be said of Bremen’s defensive performance when Denis Huseinbasic scored in the 36th minute.

Two minutes later, Bremen also scored for the first time. Niklas Füllkrug, who was taking part in the World Cup in Qatar, scored with his head after a well-played corner kick. This gave the fans and the team a slight hope.

However, Cologne quickly added another goal in the second half to take a 6:1 lead. Pavlenka had not made a single save until then. But it is also a fact that apparently not a single goal went his way. The Werder players had a really bad day.

In the 76th minute, Marco Friedl scored into his own net, giving Pavlenko no chance.
