Newcastle are having an absolutely sensational season. After thirty games played, they are in fourth place in the Premier League table, which puts them within reach of the Champions League group stage. A great performance against Tottenham brought them even closer.
After Newcastle was bought by Saudi owners, the club rose to prominence. The management decided to bring in Eddie Howe, which in hindsight seems like a brilliant move.
After thirty games played, the four-time English champion was in fourth place with 56 points, only three points behind Manchester United. On Sunday afternoon, Newcastle had a game against Tottenham on the schedule.
The fans were expecting a very interesting match, as it was a direct battle for fourth place. In case of a triumph, the team from London could get ahead of Newcastle, although they would have one more match on their account.
But that didn’t happen. Newcastle entered the game exactly as they had hoped. Joelinton produced a wonderful individual effort in the second minute which he finished with a dangerous shot. Hugo Lloris knocked it away to an unguarded Murphy, who had no problem getting the ball into the net.
In the sixth minute, the fans at St. James’ Park rejoiced for the second time. This time it was the 26-year-old Joelinton who managed to beat the Tottenham defence. Three minutes later it was even more joyful when Murphy presented himself with a beautiful shot from outside the penalty area.
Summer acquisition Alexander Isak also scored in the 19th minute. The twenty-three year old Swedish striker added another goal in the 21st minute, sending his team into a 5:0 lead.
If Newcastle continue to perform like this, they don’t have to worry about the fourth position. They can pick up another 21 points before the end of the season.
