VIDEO: How not to look like a Panenka: Depay was mocked by the goalkeeper
When Antonín Panenka ran in 1976 and sent the ball into the net from a penalty kick, he made football history. In Spain, for example, a penalty kick is no longer called anything other than “Panenka”. But you have to know how to do it, and Memphis Depay didn’t do it at all.

The doll is now known everywhere in the world, for example in Spain it is called a penalty kick. The legendary Czech striker has been imitated by great football stars such as Zinedine Zidane, Andrea Pirlo, Sergio Ramos and Lionel Messi.
But not only professional footballers, everyone has tried to play Panenka on the village field at some point. And players try it in friendly matches where nothing is at stake.
Memphis Depay was one of them. Atlético Madrid took on Real Sociedad in Monterrey, Mexico, as part of their pre-season tour and the Dutch striker started the game on the bench.
The duo of Griezmann – Morata were given priority in attack, Depay along with Correa replaced the starting pair at half-time. In the second half, the Colchoneros had a penalty and Depay took that one.
In fact, the most frequent enforcer, Antoinne Griezmann, was no longer on the pitch, allowing Depay to claim the nomination for the next penalty kick. But the Frenchman probably won’t let him take the next one.
Depay took a very short run and attempted a virgin long ball. Goalkeepers don’t like it at all and when someone does it to them, they take it as a bit of ridicule. But here, the roles are reversed.
Goalkeeper Unai Morrero stood his ground and easily took Depay’s penalty in his hands. In such a case, it is more of a mockery of the striker.
In the end, 31,000 spectators did not see a goal. Atlético Madrid will conclude their pre-season tour in San Francisco, where they will challenge Sevilla on 6 August. San Sebastian will also challenge the other Sevilla team, Betis, on the same day in San Francisco.
