An important win for Dortmund, an embarrassing and perhaps unnecessary loss for Freiburg. The second round of the Bundesliga preliminary round offered an attractive spectacle. Borussia’s win was helped by a mistake from the opposing goalkeeper.

Dortmund have long been one of Germany’s top clubs, but Freiburg have also done very well in recent years. Last season they even fought until the last round for a Champions League place. Unfortunately unsuccessfully.

However, the modest and likeable side will be looking to build on a successful year, which also saw them reach the cup final. In the first round they showed their quality by beating Augsburg 4-0. On Friday, however, they welcomed Borussia at home and once again it was a good performance.

Christian Streich’s charges scored a goal in the 35th minute and managed to stay in front for a long time despite the even match. They kept a clean sheet until the 77th minute when goalkeeper Mark Flekken made an unexpected mistake.

Jamie Bynoe-Gittens shot from long range. It wasn’t much of a shot. And it wasn’t a great shot either. It looked like something Flekken should have no problem with. But the opposite was true.

He couldn’t catch the shot, he just knocked it out, and behind him. So the ball ended up behind the goal line. It was an impulse that only increased Dortmund’s hunger for three points. And that’s what Borussia got.

A few minutes later, 17-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko turned the score around and Marius Wolf made it 3-1 in favour of Westphalia.
