It’s coming! Oleksandr Usyk will actually get to fight Tyson Fury. The announcement was made earlier, but now we finally know the date when it will happen, and on top of that we got a sharp staredown.
The two have fought fairly recently, with both wins being quite controversial. While Oleksandr Usyk managed to knock out Daniel Dubois in late August, Tyson Fury beat Francis Ngannou on points in October.
In Usyk’s case, the fight was a one-sided affair. Except for one moment. In the fifth round, Dubois hit the Ukrainian on the bottom and the champion went down. The punch was ruled below the belt, so the fight resumed, which Usyk eventually dominated.
It was Fury who was caught off guard by the former UFC heavyweight king for a change. Ngannou had never had a boxing match in his life. He was hugely underrated. Which made him all the more surprising not only to Fury, but to the world. He scored points, sent Fury down in the third round. To the public, Ngannou was the winner, but Fury won on a split decision.
Before the Fury vs. Ngannou fight, it was announced that the Englishman would face Usyk. However, it was not known when this would happen. Usyk was there to see the fight in person. He told the former UFC king not to hurt Fury too much so that their fight could happen as soon as possible.
But now we know the date and venue. The Fury vs. Usyk duel will take place on February 17 in Saudi Arabia, specifically Riyadh.
Fury and Usyk will face off for a title unification
Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk are undefeated champions. The Englishman has a 34-0-1 record, while the Ukrainian boasts a 21-0 record. While Usyk holds the belt of the WBA, WBO and IBF organizations, Fury is the king of the WBC.
The winner of this fight will become the first ever undisputed heavyweight king in the four belt era. The last man to collect all the belts was Lennox Lewis in 1999, who held the WBC, WBA and IBF titles.
Thursday night also saw a staredown. It was not only intense, but also aggressive. Both fighters had to be separated from each other. Usyk heard from Fury that he was going to be knocked out. His promoter Oleksandr Krassyuk and manager Egis Klimas are said to be his errand boys.
