VIDEO: Faraoni saves Verona in the league as Suarez did years ago for Uruguay against Ghana
The quarter-final match of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa between Uruguay and Ghana is still one of the most controversial matches ever, thanks to Luis Suarez. From now on, the Serie A barrage match between Spezia and Hellas Verona will be perceived similarly.
The quarter-final match of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa between Uruguay and Ghana is still one of the most controversial matches ever, thanks to Luis Suarez. From now on, the Serie A barrage match between Spezia and Hellas Verona will be perceived similarly.
Spezia had home advantage in the barrage match. However, it didn’t help too much, because in the fifth minute Davide Faraoni headed the ball in from a free kick and sent Hellas into the lead with the help of a defender’s run.
Ten minutes later, Ethan Ampadu equalised, his first Serie A goal. However, Verona were not to be deterred and took the lead back in the 26th minute, with Cyril Ngonge scoring with a volley from just outside the box.
And the same man struck again before half-time, dribbling the ball from midfield and surprising the goalkeeper with a shot to the near post. With Hellas leading by two goals, he crawled back and let his opponent play. In the 69th minute, it was almost reduced.
One of Spezia’s offensive players managed to outfox goalkeeper Lorenzo Montipe. The ball was headed into the net but was cleared off the line by Faraoni. At first glance a header, but a replay revealed hand play and therefore a red card.
In addition, a penalty was whistled and the team’s top scorer, the African hitman M’Bala Nzola, stood up to it. He sent the ball with a ground shot towards the right post, where the goalkeeper Montipo jumped and cleared it for a corner kick.
Like Luis Suarez at the 2010 World Cup, Faraoni’s self-sacrifice paid off in the form of a sending off at the expense of the team’s success. Suarez also grabbed a goal then, Ghana failed to give the subsequent penalty and failed in the shootout.
Even Hellas kicked the penalty they caught and the rest of the match was watched. In one instance, the crossbar saved the day, while the hero of the match, goalkeeper Montipo, did the magic in the end. The city of Romeo and Juliet will be the venue of Serie A next season.
