The Campeones Cup match between Los Angeles FC and Tigres, the champions of MLS and Mexico’s top competition Liga MX, took place in the early hours of Thursday morning. The Mexican side did better in the duel, but this match was also interesting because of the scuffle caused by Giorgio Chiellini.

The Campeones Cup match between Los Angeles FC and Tigres, the champion of the American MLS and the Mexican top competition (Liga MX), was not decided by normal time.

Looking at the statistics, it was the Mexican side that was better off, outshooting their opponents and also being on the ball more often. In any case, the American team’s situation was complicated by the red card that Diego Palacios received in the 63rd minute.

The Mexicans were the better team, especially in the second half, but even the advantage of an extra man on the pitch did not bring them the decisive goal.

However, Tigres also went down to ten men at the end of the match when thirty-four-year-old midfielder Rafael Carioca was sent off. The match therefore went to a penalty shootout, in which the Mexican club was more successful after four converted attempts.

In any case, this match was also memorable for the fans because of the altercation caused by Giorgio Chiellini. The former Juventus defender tried to take a direct free kick, but was prevented from doing so by Tigres striker Sebastián Córdova.

Chiellini then pushed him away, started to complain to the referee, whereupon he kicked the ball into his opponent. This then sparked a scuffle, which was not penalised by the head referee.

Tigres’ victory ended a string of three straight MLS team victories in the Campeones Cup. The last three editions have been won by Atlanta United, Columbus Crew and NYCFC.

Tigres themselves were the last and only Liga MX team to win the trophy in 2019, when the winner of Mexico’s top competition defeated Toronto FC.
