Aston Villa dominated the weekend’s Premier League fixture, beating Arsenal 1-0 at home. The game was decided by a quick goal from John McGinn, the subsequent pressure was not enough for the Gunners. Liverpool are first in the table.
From the beginning, the game was played at a great pace, both teams showed great concentration. In the seventh minute the home side took the lead from their first big chance, a quick action calmly finished to the back post by Scotsman John McGinn.
Arsenal then took the game into their own hands but were not very dangerous. It wasn’t until around the 30th minute that Bukayo Saka fired in the whitewash, but Emiliano Martinez went to the back post beforehand and caught the attempt with his gloves.
Martin Odegaard then threatened twice. First he surprised Martinez at the near post and just missed, then five minutes later he failed in a golden opportunity on the great anticipation of the Argentine, who sensationally caught the shot from close range.
Arsenal’s pressure peaked before half-time, but even Gabriel Jesus was kept out by Martinez. The Villans went into the box with a 1-0 lead. The Gunners continued to dominate after the change of sides, but the Villans defence held out well.
In the 57th minute, after a miscommunication between Ollie Watkins and Martinez, the home side almost scored a goal of their own. Three minutes later, Lucas Digne could have secured the lead at the other end, but David Raya pulled one back.
The Spanish goalkeeper also dealt with an awkward attempt from Watkins, but another shot from Matty Cash’s foot missed the target. Villans, however, managed to regain possession after a poor start to the second half.
The end of the game was very difficult, but Villans held on and won 1:0 to close the gap to second-placed Arsenal. Liverpool are in the lead, having managed to beat Crystal Palace this afternoon.
