The attention of most Czech fans was directed last night to the first match of the ECL quarter-finals played by Slavia Prague, who travelled to Rotterdam to face local side Feyenoord in a rematch of the autumn competition. An amazing match ended in a 3:3 draw and we have a lot to look forward to in the rematch.
However, other quarterfinal matches were also played, where potential opponents of the Seychellois were presented. The match between Olympique Marseille and PAOK Thessaloniki took place at the Stade Vélodrome. In an interesting match, the French team won 2: 1 and especially Dimitri Payet’s goal was really worth it.
French and Greek fans are among the most passionate in European football and sometimes they can take their cheering to a higher level than it needs to be. In fact, the events in the stands this time went quite far and bordered on truly dangerous behaviour by individuals.
The choirs of Marseille fans are known for often being accompanied by pyrotechnics. This time, however, the Marseille fans probably crossed the line of normal cheering.
Although the visiting fans from Greece were separated from the home Ultras, the Marseille supporters still found their way to them. They pointed their fireworks at the Greek crowd and tried to threaten them at least by air.
Although flares and fireworks are a common part of the fan scene in Greece and France and often add to the atmosphere in the stands, UEFA can retrospectively scrutinise the event in the stands.
Indeed, fan safety plays an important role in these cases within the European governing body. Will there be additional punishment?
