Video: Bizarre in the Premier League! Protesting fan handcuffed himself to the goal during the match
A great curiosity was on display in the Premier League match between Everton and Newcastle. During the match, a protesting fan stormed the pitch and chained himself to the goal. The organisers eventually had to free him with tongs.
A great curiosity was on display in the Premier League match between Everton and Newcastle. During the match, a protesting fan stormed the pitch and chained himself to the goal. The organisers eventually had to free him with tongs.
The Everton-Newcastle game hadn’t offered much up to that point. The first half ended goalless, with not many chances to be seen. But in the end, it was a fan in the stadium who caused the unexpected uproar.
At the start of the second half, a fan invaded the pitch and immediately chained himself to the goal. He was wearing a T-shirt with the words “Just stop oil” on it to express his protest.
The protesting fan gave the officials a hard time. It took more than ten minutes before the tongs were brought onto the pitch and the fan could finally be cut off. He then dropped to his knees in another act of defiance.
And what was the supporter protesting against? It was against fossil fuels, according to Just Stop Oil, which admitted to the act.
“Today a young Just Stop Oil supporter ran onto the pitch during the Everton vs Newcastle match to draw attention to the group’s demand that the government must end all new fossil fuel supply projects,” the organisation’s Twitter account reads.
The incident caused the match to be set back 18 minutes. The long setup was eventually taken advantage of by home side Everton, who scored the only goal of the match in the 99th minute.
