Liverpool won 3-1 against Benfica Lisbon in the opening quarter-final of the Champions League and went on to a successful start. Luis Díaz, the winter signing from Porto, Benfica’s biggest rival, put in a perfect performance. And when he celebrated his goal, he was almost punished severely for it.

Benfica went through to the quarter-finals against Ajax, knocking out Barcelona in the group stage. But the fans wanted to go further and were confident they could do well against Liverpool. But in the very first game they were fooled by Luis Díaz, until January a player of the hated Porto.

He was certainly not welcome at the Estádio da Luz. But that didn’t matter, he scored a goal and an assist to help them win 3-1 and was named player of the match.

However, when he scored his goal, he ran to the corner to celebrate with his teammates. As he turned his back to the stands, a bar flew in from the front row and nearly hit a Liverpool player.

Several other objects also arrived in the direction of the Liverpool players, which was commented on humorously by Liverpool defender Andy Robertson.

“There were a few lighters flying around me, I hope this will make Benfica fans stop smoking,” the Reds left back said in exaggeration.

In jest, however, the whole incident was not taken in the TV studio by Micah Richards. “That’s disgusting behaviour. I know he played for Porto, I know they’re rivals, but the fans can do better than that.”

The Liverpool players eventually left Lisbon unscathed and with a comfortable lead going into the rematch. Turning around a two-goal deficit at Anfield Road will be extremely difficult for Benfica.
