Chelsea faced Aston Villa on Wednesday night in the return leg of the FA Cup Fourth Round Proper, the oldest club competition in the world. The west London team put in one of their best performances of the season, capped by an exhibition goal from Enzo Fernandez.
Fernández arrived at Chelsea last winter, having become one of the most expensive signings in the entire Premier League. His price, however, was significantly affected by his excellent performances at the World Cup in Qatar.
He therefore came to Stamford Bridge with huge expectations. Although the 23-year-old Argentine is usually one of the Blues’ best players, the fans probably expected more from him.
However, the 2022 World Champion is understandably affected by the performance of the entire team. After all, the Blues are currently only eleventh in the Premier League table. And the road to European competitions will probably only lead through the cups.
However, on Wednesday evening, Mauricio Pochettino’s selection were at Villa Park for the FA Cup semi-final return leg. The opening encounter was played at Stamford Bridge at the end of January. But the match ended in a goalless draw.
Enzo Fernandez scored an incredible free kick
Chelsea, however, put in one of their best performances of the current season. Conor Gallagher scored the opening goal in the eleventh minute. And ten minutes later Senegalese striker Nicolas Jackson increased the lead.
After the change of sides, it was Fernandez who came to the fore. In the 54th minute, the Argentine midfielder stood up to a free kick that was played after a foul on him. And he did not give his national teammate Emiliano Martínez the slightest chance. See for yourself.
For Fernández, whose subsequent yellow card for taking off his jersey need not have been at all regrettable, it was his sixth accurate shot in the current season. He made great use of the fact that Raheem Sterling was only on the substitutes’ bench at the time. Otherwise, it would have been the English winger who would probably have taken the free kick.
Although we are only at the beginning of February, the best goal of the month by Chelsea players is probably already behind us.
