In 1996, Brno was hit by football fever

Where are those times? Even though it was not a football advertisement, the match between Brno and Slavia Prague in the top football league still made an indelible mark in the history of Czech football.

Over 44,000 spectators squeezed into the then stadium in Lužánky on 2 October 1996. The fans created a backdrop that, years later, looks like something from another world. Let us therefore recall the shots that must please the eye of every football fan.

At the beginning of the Gambrinus League in the 1996/1997 season, Brno was in a football fever. After seven rounds played, Brno Bobs led the league and in the next match hosted the previous champion from Prague Slavia.

The match between Brno and Slavia Prague made history in the Czech league

Although the crowds of fans in the stands were cheering the home team from the first minute, the visiting Pavel Novotný cooled down the crazy atmosphere in the third minute of the match. The Slavia midfielder took advantage of a return pass from Robert Vágner on the edge of the box and cleared the ball into the net with a low shot.

The Prague players then shifted down a gear and defended their lead fiercely. The home players, driven by an amazing backdrop, took advantage of this in a big push, with the visiting team’s goalkeeper Stejskal or the structure of his goal making the saves.

The team from Brno, however, gave the roaring stadium the opportunity to celebrate the home team’s goal, when 15 minutes before the end of the match Richard Dostálek opened the visiting net. The score did not change until the end of the match and the two teams settled amicably 1:1.

Over 44,000 fans still hold the league record

When the announcer called up the number of spectators in the stadium towards the end of the match, it was clear that this was an exceptional day for football. 44,120 paying spectators was not only a record for the season by the home side Brno, but still holds the top spot in the entire league.

It must be added that the attendances at the Brno stadium were legendary and Lužánky hold the top twenty positions out of the twenty most attended league matches. Now the stadium is in a desolate state and although the city councillors are trying to restore the magnificence of the football stand, property disputes are not making the situation any easier.

It is thus clear that, for years to come at least, the footage of the match described above will only be a memory in the hearts of our football fans. The biggest stadium in the domestic league is owned by Slavia Prague, whose capacity is less than 20 thousand spectators.
