Union Berlin strengthens to fight for the cup places. The modest team is surprisingly in second place in the Bundesliga, only one point behind Bayern. And former Real Madrid midfielder Isco Alarcón is coming to help the title fight.

Winner of the Golden Boy award for the best young player in the world, five-time Champions League winner and over 350 starts for Real Madrid. It’s not every day that a player with a career like that comes to a club like Union Berlin.

However, Isco started to fade towards the end of his engagement, he was virtually absent from the pitch and there was talk of a lifestyle problem. After the end of his contract last summer, he went to Sevilla, where he signed a 2-year contract.

He was brought to Andalusia by Isco’s “football father” Julen Lopetegui, who was fired after a while. The new coach, a bit of a general in style, Jorge Sampaoli disliked Isco from the start and it resulted in a big argument from which there was no way out.

So both parties agreed to an early termination of his contract and Isco became a free agent again. The question was whether someone else from Europe would reach for him or whether he would go overseas, for example, or end his career altogether.

In the end, a somewhat unexpected option came up. The 30-year-old Benalmádena native is heading to Union Berlin, where he will fight for the Bundesliga title, but also for trophies in general. The top six is extremely busy.

Union are only one point behind second-placed Bayern, but they also have a four-point lead over sixth-placed Frankfurt.

Isco will arrive in Berlin today and undergo a medical. He is then expected to sign a contract until 2024 with an option for another year.
