The Champions League final, which was due to take place in St Petersburg, Russia, is now moving to Paris. The reason for UEFA’s decision is the Russian-Ukrainian crisis.

UEFA, the main governing body of European football, has announced that Russia will be stripped of the opportunity to host this year’s Champions League final. It was due to take place in St Petersburg.

The most important European football event of the year was originally scheduled to take place on May 28 at the Gazprom Arena, where Zenit St. Petersburg plays its home matches. However, following the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops, European football’s governing body will move the final elsewhere.

Following reports of Russia’s attack on Ukraine at the behest of President Vladimir Putin, UEFA issued an announcement that it would hold an emergency meeting on Friday. The venue for the final was to be at a UEFA Category 4 stadium. You can see the stadiums falling into this category here.

“Following developments in the situation between Russia and Ukraine over the last 24 hours, the UEFA President has decided to convene an extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee on Friday 25 February at 10:00 CET to assess the situation and take any necessary decisions,” the UEFA statement read.

Following the meeting, the UEFA Executive Committee decided that the new venue for the final will be the Parc des Princes, the home stadium of Paris Saint-Germain.
