Champions League
UEFA is planning a new European competition for big clubs to be played in the USA. Nothing has been decided, reassures Čeferin
Footballers are supposed to have a holiday after a busy season, instead they play in national teams. Some stars have already dared to criticise the Nations League loudly, bothered by the huge number of matches. And would UEFA address this? No. Instead, they are inventing a new competition.
Footballers are supposed to have a holiday after a busy season, instead they play in national teams. Some stars have already dared to criticise the Nations League loudly, bothered by the huge number of matches. And would UEFA address this? No. Instead, they are inventing a new competition.
UEFA is planning another unpopular move. While it is under fire from critics, it does nothing to address that. Instead, it’s figuring out how to generate a bit more money again. And the idea of a new competition is born. Or rather, a complete overhaul of an existing one.
It is now customary for the winners of the Champions League and Europa League to face off in the European Super Cup at the start of the new season. This year, Real Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt will face off. However, this tradition could soon come to an end.
This is expected to happen in 2024, when the Champions League is reformed, expanding from the current 32 participants to 36 in the future.
According to French sports daily L’Equipe, UEFA wants to replace the European Super Cup with a four-team mini-tournament, which would be held at the start of each season just before the Champions League group stage begins.
The idea came out of a call for tenders for the broadcasting rights for the new and reformed Champions League. UEFA was thus contacted by AFP and learned directly from boss Aleksander Čeferin that nothing had been decided yet, but that the idea did indeed exist.
It is not yet clear what the mini-tournament would look like, but it is likely that it would only involve the biggest clubs. The Champions League winner would be guaranteed to participate, there is no word yet on how the other three places will be given out.
What will certainly please European football fans even more than another reform is the fact that the tournament should be held annually in the United States.
