UEFA has finally admitted that the current EURA system is unfair and meaningless for teams.
Playing the European Championship in eleven countries was Michel Platini’s idea, but his successor Aleksander Čeferin does not want to repeat such a tournament system.
Čeferin admits that the system is grossly unfair for the teams.
“I wouldn’t support it anymore. It’s too difficult and unfair for some teams because one has to travel ten thousand kilometres and another only a thousand kilometres,” said the UEFA president.
But this is not a new finding. This is exactly what critics of the current system have been accusing UEFA of after its publication. But UEFA stood its ground.
Čeferin then said he did not want to repeat the current system.
“Moreover, it is not fair to the fans either, because one day they are in Rome and the next in Baku, where they fly four and a half hours. It was an interesting idea, but it was difficult to organise. I don’t think we will do it again,” Čeferin added.
The answer to this is that the idea itself was not even remotely interesting for football fans. Instead, UEFA produced the strangest EURO in history.
