Salernitana are not doing well so far in the current season. He has only 11 points from 23 games. The club didn’t even have to start the spring season at all and had to change ownership by the end of last year, otherwise they would have been eliminated from Serie A.
So every point counts, the club from Salerno has strengthened over the winter, with Argentines Federico Fazio and Diego Perotti joining the team. And also Simone Verdi.
The twenty-nine year old, who has also made starts for the Italian national team, came on loan from FC Torino, where he has not played practically since September. The former Bologna striker shone on his debut with two beautiful goals, which he managed to score in 16 minutes of play.
But they were beautiful mainly because the Salerno striker scored them from direct kicks. The first came in the 3rd minute when, after a foul on legend Franck Ribéry, Verdi stood on the edge of the penalty area and beat the visiting goalkeeper with a beautiful shot.
The visitors equalised 9 minutes after the first goal when Rey Manaj scored from the penalty spot to make it 1-1. However, fouling around the penalty area did not pay off for Spezia for the second time. In the 16th minute, Verdi was again on the ball and, as in the first case, he swept the top corner of the visitors’ goal from even further away.
But even that was not enough to give Salernitana the three points. In the 30th minute a hand contact in the penalty area resulted in a penalty kick being converted by a Spezia player with a very similar surname to the hero of the match, Daniele Verde.
The second half brought nothing of substance. Salernitana are still last in the Serie A table. They are 3 points behind penultimate Genoa and 9 points behind the relegation zone.
