The former Atlético Madrid player is just the first of many reinforcements that could visit St. James’ Park in January. Or at least that’s what all Magpies supporters would like to see.
Indeed, the defence of the nineteenth Premier League side could desperately need strengthening, which is why several candidates for the stopper position are emerging.
For Newcastle’s negotiators, Dutch defender Sven Botman is a priority. The twenty-one-year-old Dutchman is currently defending the colours of Lille, who nevertheless want to keep their player until the end of the season. However, the club’s unfavourable financial situation could force the French club to sell him for around £40 million.
We’ve already written about Newcastle’s interest in Rob Holding, and the desire to bring Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the north of England persists as well.
Arsenal would accept both a loan offer (plus 100% salary takeover – ed.) and a transfer offer of at least £10m from potential suitors.
Newcastle’s owners are also targeting former Gunners players. Aaron Ramsey’s not-so-successful stint is coming to an end and the Newcastle organisation is among those interested in the Welshman’s services. Ramsey would thus represent an ideal and very experienced reinforcement for the Magpies.
In case of failure to sign the aforementioned players, Newcastle officials are ready to send offers to Norwich for Todd Cantwell, to Old Trafford for Anthony Martial and to the red part of Liverpool for Divock Origi.
