Not much interesting happened in the first half. The opening act didn’t have any footballing beauty and the score was tied 0:0 at half time. Brighton’s only chance of note came in the 22nd minute, when a dropped ball from a corner was headed to Mwepa, but he just flicked it away in a good position.
If the fan expected Tottenham to take the reins of the game in the second half and start creating chances, he must have been disappointed at the end. On the contrary, the slightly more active team was surprisingly the visiting Brighton.
Brighton even got a few shots in the second half, but none of them tested goalkeeper Lloris. Tottenham, on the other hand, were completely toothless going forward, as evidenced by the fact that in 90 minutes their players did not send a single shot on target.
The fate of the match was decided by the set-up. After a series of several bounces, Leandro Trossard found the ball and brazenly broke into the penalty area and with a clever shot to the back post, he decided the victory for his team. Brighton then calmly managed the six-minute set-up and took the valuable three points from the game.
For Tottenham this result means a complication in the fight for participation in the Champions League. They still hold the fourth position, which is enough to qualify, but Manchester United is only three points behind with the win, and Arsenal is also three points behind.
Brighton, rather surprisingly, is thus shuffling the battles at the top of the table. A week ago it also lost three points to Arsenal, who are currently in sixth place. Brighton themselves are in a quiet 10th position.
