Tottenham London take yesterday’s UEFA decision to cancel the Europa League match against Rennes as a great injustice. For the Roosters, such a decision means the definitive loss of their hopes of qualifying for the spring part of the competition.
Speaking to Sky Sports, coach Antonio Conte did not hide his indignation and revealed that the club’s management is considering an appeal to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The very first edition of the new UEFA Conference League brought a problem that has repercussions beyond the football turf.
Due to the infection of covid-19 in the Tottenham squad, the England team’s players were unable to take part in the last group match against France’s Rennes on 9 December.
Whereas the fate of Spurs was still undecided at the time of the play-off draw, UEFA has now definitively decided to cancel the match in favour of the French team.
Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem have now qualified for the knockout stages from Group G.
Even coach Conte himself called the decision unbelievable. “I am very disappointed with UEFA’s decision. We deserve the opportunity to play for promotion on the pitch, not in court. I find this decision very unfair. I cannot accept it,” the Italian coach was not complacent.
“We did everything we could to play against Rennes, but we had eight players and five members of the coaching staff infected. I hope it is not final and CAS will reverse this incredible decision,” Conte added.
