Tottenham Hotspur defeated Brentford 3: 2 in the 22nd round of the Premier League. Spurs had to turn the game around after a half-time loss. Thanks to the win, they moved up to 4th place, one point ahead of Aston Villa.
A surprising first half for the away team
Tottenham entered the match as a paper favourite, given their position in the table, they were playing a team from the top five of the table against a team that may still have some rescue work to do. The unfavourable record from the last mutual duels also played against the home team.
Brentford can play Tottenham. In the last four duels with them, they have not lost even once. And that was the case in the first half, when Brentford played the home fans on their nerves. Moreover, the home side were weakened by the loss of their top scorer.
The third top scorer of the Premier League, Korean striker Heung-Min Son, who with 12 league goals took over the shooting role from Harry Kane, is on national team duty and his absence from the pitch was quite noticeable.
In fact, Brentford took the initiative of the game into their own hands in the first 20 minutes and at times it looked like they were not playing on the opponents’ pitch.
Brentford overcame the home goalkeeper Vicario as early as the 12th minute, but after a video review an offside was revealed. This rather energised the visiting team even more and just 3 minutes later they really took the lead.
After a deflected shot, Neal Maupay got to the ball and scored his fourth goal of the season. The score didn’t change for the rest of the half after that and it was 1-0 to Brentford going into the booths.
Tottenham’s turnaround in the second half
It was like a completely different team came out in the second half. Tottenham showed a fantastic turnaround, managing to score three goals against Brentford in the space of just eight minutes.
Already in the 48th minute of the match Timo Werner found Destiny Udogie perfectly, he immediately fired at Mark Flekken, but the shot was blocked. With luck, he also got the subsequent finish and it was no longer mistaken. The game was tied.
Just a minute later Tottenham were in front and again Werner was there. His pass found a free Brennan Johnson and he slotted the ball into the exposed part of the net. Seven minutes later Richarlison got to the ball in the whitewash and shot past Flekken.
London were clearly in control of the game. But a fatal mistake by the home side’s first goal scorer Udogie sent the ball home in the worst possible way.
Toney got to the ball and he had no more trouble overcoming Vicario. Tottenham thus caused themselves an unexpected complication. Brentford might even have equalised in injury time, but the excellent Vicario no longer scored.
Spurs thus celebrate a difficult victory. After a poor first half, a perfect eight minutes and a fatal mistake, Brentford managed to win 3-2.
