Tottenham are experiencing one of the best losses to a season in their history. Through everything that has happened at the club over the summer it seems unbelievable. The biggest credit for this goes without a doubt to coach Ange Postecoglou.

At the beginning of the summer, the team was taken over by a virtually unknown Australian coach who was supposed to lead the team around Harry Kane or Heung Min Son back to the European Cups. Spurs finished as high as eighth in the Premier League last season, leaving them without a European Cup this season.

However, right in the transfer window, the coach suffered the first crack in his plan. Harry Kane went on an overseas adventure to Munich. With the money earned, the club bought Johnson Brennan from Nottingham and Argentine talented striker Veliz Alejo. Everyone will realise that neither of the new arrivals is a legitimate replacement for a world-class striker.

The biggest incoming star is James Maddison from relegated Leicester. He fitted into the team straight away, entering the season with two assists against Brentford. The Englishman formed an almost lethal duo with Son. The Korean has 6 goals after 9 games, Maddison has 2 goals and 5 assists. If Richarlison were to join them, the chances of a good finish would increase.

Unfortunately, the Brazilian didn’t have a breathtaking first season in the new jersey, racking up more yellow cards than goals, not exactly an ideal stat for a striker. The new season hasn’t started any better, as after the opening few rounds he declared to the media that he would be seeking help from a psychologist due to his mental health. Anyway, he is the one who was supposed to score goals after Kane’s departure.

The team’s season opener went beyond expectations, the opening win against Brentford was complemented by a win against Manchester United, hence the notch that drew attention to Tottenham. Add to that further wins against Bournemouth, Burnley and Sheffield and we find Spurs on top of the entire Premier League.

The only blemish is their Carabao Cup exit at Fulham. However, the magnificent ride in the league continued with a draw against Arsenal, a win over Liverpool where we could discuss VAR errors again and again, and in the last game, even without the suspended Bissouma, the team managed to win on Luton’s soil. Bottom line, 9 games, 23 points and first place in the Premier League so far (not a full round played.

So after eight rounds they had 20 points on their account, and this means the second best start to the season in the history of the whole club. The only better start the club had was in the 1960/61 season when they had full points after eight rounds and ended the season with the Championship title. Whether the great start will mean a title again this season is still a question mark.

The closest Tottenham experienced to a great start was in the 2016/17 season when, after the same number of games played as the aforementioned records, they managed 18 points and finished the season in second place. So, as the games get closer, we will be able to see if the title dream will dissipate or gain momentum. The fact that Tottenham do not play European cups also plays into their hands, so they can only focus on the Premier League.
