Tomas Soucek had the season of his life. At West Ham, he became a key figure in leading the team to the Europa League and his performances were followed by big clubs. In the national team he was one of the important elements of a successful Euro. His consistent performances deservedly earned him the Czech Republic’s Golden Ball journalism award.

the 26-year-old centre back played 56 games across all competitions during the season, scoring an incredible 14 goals from the defensive midfield position! The prestigious WhoScored server awarded him an average match rating of 7.37. A great result, don’t you think?

The upward trend of Soucek’s career may be far from over. He’s on a mission to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in a national team jersey, and at club level he’ll be looking to build on a successful season with West Ham.

Moreover, after the Euros, the current captain Vladimír Darida retired from the national team and the Havlíčkův Brod native will play an important role as his deputy. Soucek is rumoured to be a natural leader. He had the armband at Slavia, in the national team, and now it’s West Ham’s turn.

Interestingly, Tomas Soucek is only the third player in history (since 1997) to win the journalist’s award. Before him, only Pavel Nedved and Petr Cech managed to do it.

Reactions of the football public

“Congratulations, Tomas,” was the message from West Ham United themselves.

In addition to congratulating Hammers fans, an unexpected guest also joined in under Soucek’s post. “You are the best midfielder in the world. Join Tottenham, Tom.”

Sadly, relatively few congratulations came from his homeland. Congratulations from the Czech Republic could be counted on one hand, but the fact is that Twitter is not used nearly as much in the Czech Republic as it is in the British Isles.
