Liverpool increased their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points after Thursday’s triumph over Leicester. But coach Arne Slot is still cautious and refuses to talk about the title. After the game, the Dutchman recalled the fate of Manchester City, which is constantly drowning in a major crisis in terms of play and results.

  • Liverpool beat Leicester 3-1 on Thursday
  • They are seven points clear at the top of the Premier League
  • Yet coach Arne Slot refuses to talk about the title

Liverpool consolidated their position at the top of the Premier League table with a 3-1 win over Leicester, moving seven points clear of second-placed Chelsea. Yet Dutch manager Arne Slot stressed after the game that any thoughts of title celebrations are very premature indeed. His team has been on a 22-match unbeaten streak since mid-September.

“If you’ve been in this sport for a long time, like our players or me, you know that twenty rounds before the end you don’t talk about the title. Just two months ago we were a point behind Manchester City, and look what happened there – injuries, bad luck and penalties. That can happen to any team,” Slot said at the post-match press conference, as quoted by skysports.com.

Liverpool secured the win thanks to goals from Cody Gakpe, Curtis Jones and Mohamed Salah, who turned the game around after an early Jordan Ayew strike. Moreover, second-placed Chelsea surprisingly lost at home to Fulham (1: 2), which allowed Liverpool to increase their lead. The Reds also have one game in hand.

Liverpool haven’t played easy games, thinks Slot

Slot, however, dismissed the notion that his team are heading towards the title without any problems after the game. “We haven’t had any easy wins this season,” he remarked. “It could have been easy against Tottenham but then we conceded two goals and it was 5-3. The Premier League is an extremely tough competition and requires consistency and effort in every game.”

Liverpool have had to deal with player dropouts during the season, another reason for caution, according to Slote. “In this league you always have to give your maximum to games, even if you have all the players available. Then when injuries or card penalties come up, the whole team has to work that much harder. That’s why we have to progress match by match,” added the 46-year-old Dutchman.

The win over Leicester showed Liverpool’s high quality and, despite Slota’s caution, proved once again who are the biggest title aspirants. “Of course we follow the table, but at the same time we are aware of how many games are still to be played,” Slot keeps himself and his players on their toes. And that’s probably a good thing.

The Reds face West Ham (away) in their next game and Slot’s charges will be looking to maintain their lead at the top of the Premier League. Are they really going for a 20th title?
