The world of combat sports has been rocked in recent days by a viral video from a slapping tournament where a fighter with a dangerous injury continues to fight.
A hand-to-hand combatant continues to fight with a significant head injury
Tonight was the first slap-fighting tournament for the new Power Slap Fighting organization. Although Dana White’s gala was supposed to take place last week, the start was postponed due to the UFC president’s New Year’s Eve affair when cameras caught him slapping his wife back.
The incident came at the least opportune time for the head of the world’s biggest MMA organization. Moreover, the discipline regularly comes under fire from critics for its dangers to fighters’ health.
Fears were only confirmed by the footage from the Romanian RFX tournament, which outraged combat sports fans. Fighter Sorin Comsa suffered a nasty head injury during a ten-round slap, but that didn’t stop him from continuing to fight. Judge for yourself.
The footage of the aforementioned fight has caused a wave of disgust
The footage immediately went viral on social media, and it must be added that it caused considerable dislike among fans. Most of the fans are expressing their dislike precisely because of the threat to their health, as the fighters are practically unprotected against the opponent’s blows.
Sportskeeda has summarized the most interesting reactions on Twitter:
“The guy’s face is swollen and bleeding madly, but he keeps going, it can’t be very healthy.”
“Combat sport where you can’t defend yourself is useless.”
“This is absolutely disgusting.”
But the injured man eventually celebrated success, winning the entire tournament and taking home a ridiculous prize of around 120,000 CZK.
The size of the prize also played a role in frequent fan posts, with some referring to the risk associated with CTE (brain damage due to frequent blows to the head).
“Brain injury for 5,000 euros? What a f**king payday,” one fan asked. So the controversy in the industry is gaining momentum and we’ll see how the sport evolves. It has a large fan base in Poland and Russia, while Red Face plans to organise similar tournaments here.
