Juventus Turin will not play in the upcoming edition of the Conference Europa League. The Italian club is facing a penalty as a result of falsified accounts, UEFA officially confirmed its decision on Friday evening.
Last season was a very difficult and unpleasant one for Juventus due to the accounting manipulation. The Italian giant firstly incurred a penalty in the form of a deduction of 15 points, only to have them subsequently reinstated.
Not to mention the penalties for individual officials. The appeal was successful, the situation seemed to be saved, at least from this point of view. However, after the successful appeal and the return of the points, it was the breach of the rules that the Court of Appeal was concerned with.
Specifically the breach of Rule 4 – involving fair play and sporting integrity as a result of the falsification of accounts. The Court of Appeal then upheld the deduction of ten points.
The Old Lady dropped to seventh place in the Serie A table because of this deduction, thus securing at least qualification for the European Conference League. However, as Italian media, including Corriere dello Sport, reported a few weeks ago, Juventus will not even play in that next season.
The Turin giant has agreed with UEFA not to enter the Conference League in the upcoming season. Moreover, a few hours ago, the aforementioned organisation officially confirmed this.
This is because, in addition to fines, point deductions and other punishments, Juventus were in danger of not being able to play in the Champions League in the 2024/25 edition.
The Bianconeri thus resorted to the understandable alternative of opting out of the Conference League rather than losing participation in the Champions League afterwards. However, this is not the end of the punishment for Juventus.
The Italian club has also been fined €10 million and will have to pay the same amount if it breaks financial fair play again by 2025. Instead of Juventus, the European Conference League will be played next season by this year’s finalist – Fiorentina.
